The APC-40 is a midi interface that can be used to control a music software program called Ableton. The out the box functionality is great, but it just didn’t offer enough flexibility when Djing which seemed a real shame to me. With this in mind I took it upon myself (what was I thinking!) to learn Python from scratch so I could manually edit the decompiled scripts that power the APC-40 and introduce a whole load of new functionality.
I must admit, it wasn’t the easiest thing to do, I found Python quite tricky at first and I had never done anything like this before. It took me a while, but I got there in the end and I must say that I have learnt so much from this experience, it has definitely made me a better coder. The best part is that the finished scripts have allowed me to finally harness the full potential of the APC-40 for djing and after placing the scripts and template online for others to download, the feedback I have been getting has been incredible and made all the hard work worth while. It was nice to finally give something back to the incredible Ableton community who had helped me so many times in the past.
