I like the list.

I find that the MeasuereIt extension isn’t needed if using the Web Developer Toolbar, since that feature is included under the “Miscellaneous” menu.

I've created an alternative to sIFR that I think you might find useful. It is very similar but it doesn't use Flash and can insert an image that will display the proper text even when images are disabled. It also requires very little config. Just drop in your fonts and update your CSS, in most cases. You can take a look at http://facelift.mawhorter.net/.

@web design brighton: it’s called sIFR for “Shaun Inman Flash Replacement” as a nod to the person who inspired the technique. Funny name, but kind of memorable!

@Quirksmode: The technique you mention as an alternative to sIFR works, but what happens when a user is viewing the site with CSS on/Images off? They see nothing useful, for certain.

I have adapted a technique called “Gilder/Levin” image replacement. The downside is that you have to add an empty span to the heading or text block you want to replace, but it works like a charm for the “CSS on/Images off” scenario since the text is still there and not moved off screen:

All of the techniques that Dave mentions in the linked article suffer from some sort of drawback. But at least you can use what suits you the best. My biggest complaint with sIFR is the “CSS off/JavaScript on” scenario in which you see the sIFR heading and the original heading side-by-side. I am hoping to customize sIFR a bit to only display when the user’s browser has CSS enabled.
